Phuket has changed dramatically over the past few years. A change that for many reasons makes Phuket a safe haven and probably one of the few places that will keep attracting positive capital flows and show good capital appreciation for the foreseeable future.
About 20 years ago, traveling from Hong Kong to Phuket was quite an adventure. You had to fly to Bangkok first and it took about 10 hours to get here. Not much more time than was needed to fly over from Europe. The building quality was not good and there was limited supply in property developments. At that time the island had only a few tourists and no international branded hotels.
Twenty years later the island has developed into an international destination attracting a few million of tourists every year and with a large supply of high-end property, many international 5-star hotels, a few marinas and about 20,000 expatriates.
Although there is some nightlife, especially in the area around Bangla Road in Patong, Phuket does not have the reputation of being a party island like Koh Samui, Ibiza and the likes. But this is regarded as being one of the positive aspects as this is why Phuket still attracts a variety of people.
Being an island, Phuket still has the charm of being isolated from the world in many ways. This includes being isolated from Bangkok’s political situation. The past few years many things happened that could have been harmful to the island. We had 9/11 in 2001, just before the start of the high season when everyone was afraid of getting on to an airplane; there was the bombing in Bali in 2002, again at the start of the high season and when the word was spread that Phuket was the next target for the terrorists; there was the SARS and bird flu; the 2004 tsunami; the 2006 military coup… Somehow, Phuket was always able to minimize the damage and to overcome these obstacles without too much problems.
At times of a global financial crisis, Phuket seems to be an exception again. Tourist arrivals for October were higher than last year and hotel occupancy is good as well.
